Buttermilk breakfast biscuits

Ingredients:
2 1/2 cupAll-purpose flour
2 tbspSugar
1 1/2 tspCream of tartar
3/4 tspBaking soda
1/2 tspSalt
1/2 cup(1 stick) butter
2/3 cupButtermilk
1 Egg
Milk
Additional sugar
Procedures:
1Makes 8 to 10 preheat oven to 425°F.
2Grease baking sheet.
3Mix flour, 2 tbs sugar, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt in large bowl.
4Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse meal.
5Stir in buttermilk and egg.
6Turn dough out onto floured surface and knead until smooth; dough will be moist.
7Roll dough out into circle ?inch thick.
8Transfer to prepared sheet.
9Cut into wedges.
10Brush top with milk; sprinkle with sugar.
11Bake until golden brown, about 15 minutes.
12Serve immediately variation: add 2/3 cup raisins, ?cup mined candied orange peel, 1 tbs finely grated lemon peel and 1 tsp caraway seed to dough.
