Japanese eggplant with sesame-ginger glaze

Ingredients:
1 tbspRice-wine or cider vinegar
1 tbspSoy sauce
1 tbspHoisin sauce (optional)
3 tbspToasted sesame oil
1 tbspSugar
2 tbspMinced fresh ginger
3 Garlic cloves, minced
8 smallJapanese eggplant (4 oz ea.)
-- halved lengthwise
2 tbspOil
Salt
Freshly ground black pepper
2 Scallions, minced
Procedures:
1Whisk together vinegar, soy sauce, hoisin sauce (if using), sesame oil, sugar, ginger and garlic in a small bowl.
2Brush oil over all surfaces of eggplant and sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste.
3Prepare barbecue grill (medium heat).
4Place eggplant, cut side down, on grill and let cook 5 minutes.
5Turn eggplant and brush with glaze; continue cooking until eggplant is very soft.
6Transfer eggplant to serving platter and drizzle with more glaze.
7Sprinkle with minced scallions and serve
