Ingredients:
1 cupChick peas, soaked
1/4 tspTurmeric
1 ea Green chile
1/2 tspSalt
2 tspCumin, ground
2 tbspRaisins
1 1/2 tbspVegetable oil
1 ea Bay leaf
1 eachDried red chile
5 ea Cardamom pods
1 ea 2" cinnamon stick
2 ea Cloves
1/4 tspKalonji seeds
1 tbspGreen chile, seeded & minced
2 tbspCoconut, shredded
1/4 tspGaram masala
Ghee, optional
Procedures:
1Cook chickpeas in water with turmeric & whole chile for about 1 hour or until they are very tender.
2Discard whole chiles.
3Add salt & cumin & remove from heat.
4Puree one cup of the dal mixture in a blender, adding a little water if necessary.
5Return to the pan, add raisins & bring back to a simmer.
6Keep warm.
7Heat oil in a small skillet.
8Fry bay leaf & red chile until the chile darkens.
9Fry cardamom, cinnamon & cloves for 5 seconds.
10Add kalonji & fry a few seconds longer.
11Turn heat to low & add minced chile & coconut.
12Cook for a few seconds, stirring constantly.
13Remove from heat & pour over the dal.
14Simmer a couple more minutes & remove from heat.
15Garnish with lemon wedges, sprinkle with cilantro & ghee & serve.
