Tasty fig layer bars

Ingredients:
1 cupBrown sugar
1 cupMargarine or butter
1/2 tspSalt
1 3/4 cupRolled oats
1 3/4 cupFlour, sifted
1/2 tspVanilla
FILLING
1 cupSugar
8 ozCalifornia dried figs
-- finely chopped
1/2 cupNuts, chopped (optional)
1/2 cupWater, boiling
Procedures:
1Combine sugar, figs, nuts and water in a medium saucepan.
2Heat for 15 minutes or until creamy, stirring frequently.
3pour half the flour mixture into a well-greased shallow pan (8" x 12").
4Layer with the filling, and spread remaining flour mixture over filling as evenly as possible.
5Bake at 350°F. for 30 to 35 minutes, or until lightly brown.
6Cool and serve.
