Cherry-pecan balls

Ingredients:
1 cupShortening
3 ozCream cheese, softened
1 cupSugar
1 Egg
1 tspAlmond extract
2 1/2 cupFlour, all purpose
1/4 tspBaking soda
1/2 tspSalt
1 3/4 cupPecans, finely chopped
36 Maraschino cherries
-halved
Procedures:
1Cream shortening and cream cheese in a large mixing bowl; gradually add sugar, beating until light and fluffy.
2Add egg; beat well.
3Stir in almond extract.

5Sift together flour, soda and salt in a medium mixing bowl; add to creamed mixture, beating well.
6Chill 1 hour.

8Shape dough into 1 inch balls; roll in pecans.
9Place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets.
10Gently press a cherry half in center of each cookie.
11Bake at 350 °F for 12-15 minutes.
12Remove to wire racks to cool.
13Store in airtight containers in refrigerator up to 1 week.
