1995 4th place: friendship cookies

Ingredients:
2 1/4 cupUnsifted all-purpose flour
3/4 cupVegetable oil
1/2 cupSugar
1 Egg
1/4 cupPure maple syrup
1/4 cupSorghum molasses
2 tspBaking soda
1 tbspGround ginger
1/2 tspCinnamon
1/2 tspGround cardamom
1/4 tspSalt
Additional sugar for coating
Procedures:
1Heat oven to 350 degrees.
2Have ungreased baking sheet(s) ready.
3Combine all ingredients, except sugar for coating, in large bowl of an electric mixer.
4Beat on low speed until combined.
5Refrigerate to firm dough slightly, about 20 minutes.
6Roll into large balls, using ?cup dough each for large cookies or a scant tablespoon for smaller cookies (dough will be soft).
7Roll in additional sugar to coat.
8Arrange on baking sheet, spacing them 3 inches apart.
9Bake until set, about 15 minutes for large cookies and 10 minutes for smaller ones.
10Cool on baking sheet 1 minute before transferring to wire rack to cool.
