Oregon hazelnut butter cookies

Ingredients:
1 cupUnsalted butter, softened
1/2 cupSugar
2 tbspPure maple syrup
2 tspVanilla
2 cupAll-purpose flour
--(unbleached)
1 1/4 cupFinely chopped hazelnuts
--(Oregon hazelnuts)
1/2 cupSemisweet chocolate chips
--(optional)
Procedures:
1In a mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar.
2Add syrup and vanilla.
3Mix in the flour just until combined, then fold in the nuts.
4Shape into two long rolls, about 9 inches long and 1-?inches in diameter, and wrap them in wax paper.
5Chill until very firm, at least 2 hours.
6Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
7Cut the dough into ?inch slices and place an inch apart on ungreased baking sheets.
8Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, until the edges are just beginning to brown.
9Cool on a wire rack.
10If desired, melt the chocolate chips slowly, stirring often until smooth.
11Using a butter knife, spread a thin layer of melted chocolate over the bottom of each cookie.
12Place on wax paper and chill briefly to harden the chocolate.
13Peel from the paper and store airtight in a cool place.
