Molasses cookies a.k.a. ginger cookies (christmas)

Ingredients:
1 cupBrown sugar
1 cupShortening
1 cupMolasses, (green label)
1 Egg, beaten
1 tspBaking soda, in
1/2 cupHot water
1/2 tspCloves, * see note
1 tspNutmeg, * see note
1 tspCinnamon
1 tspGinger, * see note
7 cupUnsifted flour, ** see note
1/2 tspSalt
Procedures:
1Recipe by: margaret groman cream shortening, add sugar gradually, then molasses and beaten egg.
2Combine baking soda and hot water; add to the first mixture.
3Sift together flour, salt, and spices.
4(may want to sift several times until well blended).
5Stir in dry ingredients, and blend thoroughly.
6Chill in refrigerator for several hours.
7roll out on a well-floured board.
8(add more flour if dough is too soft).
9Cut into figures.
10Bake at 350°F for 8-10 minutes.
