Ingredients:
DOUGH
1/2 cupBUTTER, or MARGARINE
-softened
1/2 cupSugar, GRANULATED
1/2 cupSugar, BROWN, firmly packed
2 ea EGGS
1/2 tspVANILLA
1 cupFlour, WHOLE-WHEAT
1 1/2 cupFlour, ALL-PURPOSE
1/4 cupWHEAT GERM, toasted
-unsweetened
1/4 tspSALT
1/4 tspBAKING SODA
BASIC FILLING
X FRUIT (see below)
1/2 cupWALNUTS, or ALMONDS
1/3 cupSUGAR
1/2 cupWATER
1 tspLEMON PEEL, grated
2 tbspLEMON JUICE
FIG FILLING
1 xRecipe BASIC FILLING

1 lbsFIGS, dried, (about 2 cups
-lightly packed)
PRUNE FILLING

2 cupPRUNES, pitted, (moist-pack)
1/4 tspGROUND CINNAMON
Procedures:
1For dough: in a large bowl of an electric mixer, beat butter, granulated sugar and brown sugar until creamy.
2Beat in eggs and vanilla.
3In another bowl, stir together the whole wheat flour, all- purpose flour, wheat germ, salt and baking soda; gradually add to butter mixture, blending thoroughly.
4Cover dough tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate until easy to handle (at least 1 hour) or until the next day.
5Meanwhile, prepare filling of your choice; set aside.
