| 1 | Heat oven to 350 degrees. |
| 2 | Melt butter in heavy 10-inch oven proof skillet or 9x9x2 inch square pan. |
| 3 | Sprinkle brown sugar evenly over butter. |
| 4 | Arrange apple slices in row around edge of skillet. |
| 5 | Arrange remaining slices in 2 more rows in skillet. |
| 6 | Spoon cranberry sauce between rows. |
| 7 | Mix flour, granulated sugar, baking powder and salt in a large bowl. |
| 8 | Add shortening, milk and vanilla. |
| 9 | Beat on medium speed 2 minutes, scraping bowl constantly. |
| 10 | Add egg. |
| 11 | Beat on medium speed 2 minutes, scraping bowl frequently. |
| 12 | Pour over fruit in skillet. |
| 13 | Bake about 50 minutes until toothpick inserted in center of cake comes out clean. |
| 14 | Immediately invert onto heatproof serving plate. |
| 15 | Leave skillet over cake a few minutes (brown sugar mixture will run down over cake); remove skillet. |
| 16 | Serve warm with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream if desired. |
