Harvest upside-down cake

Ingredients:
1/2 cupButter
1/2 cupPacked brown sugar
2 medCooking apples, peeled &
Sliced
1/2 cupWhole berry cranberry sauce
1 1/3 cupFlour
C Granulated sugar
2 tbspBaking powder
1/2 tbspSalt
1/3 cupShortening
2/3 cupMilk
1 tbspVanilla
1 Egg
Procedures:
1Heat oven to 350 degrees.
2Melt butter in heavy 10-inch oven proof skillet or 9x9x2 inch square pan.
3Sprinkle brown sugar evenly over butter.
4Arrange apple slices in row around edge of skillet.
5Arrange remaining slices in 2 more rows in skillet.
6Spoon cranberry sauce between rows.
7Mix flour, granulated sugar, baking powder and salt in a large bowl.
8Add shortening, milk and vanilla.
9Beat on medium speed 2 minutes, scraping bowl constantly.
10Add egg.
11Beat on medium speed 2 minutes, scraping bowl frequently.
12Pour over fruit in skillet.
13Bake about 50 minutes until toothpick inserted in center of cake comes out clean.
14Immediately invert onto heatproof serving plate.
15Leave skillet over cake a few minutes (brown sugar mixture will run down over cake); remove skillet.
16Serve warm with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream if desired.
