Ingredients:
6 xBosc, or other firm winter
-pears
1 cupSemi-dry white wine, such
-as Riesling
1 cupApple juice
1 largeLemon, juice only
5 xWhole cloves

Procedures:
1Peel pears, leaving them whole.
2Using a melon baller, core pears from the bottom up.
3Place in a saucepan and add wine, apple juice, lemon juice and cloves.
4Place pan over med-high heat and bring to a boil.
5Lower heat to medium and simmer, uncovered, for 25 to 30 minutes, until pears are soft but not mushy.
6remove cloves from poaching liquid and spoon liquid over pears to serve.
7Serves 6.
8variation: omit lemon jice and substitute apple cide for the apple juice.
