Ingredients:
2 cupUncooked macaroni
3 tbspButter or margarine
1 smallOnion, finely chopped
2 tbspFlour
1 tspSalt
1 tspDry mustard
1 tspSalt
1/4 tspPepper
2 cupMilk
2 1/2 cupShredded Cheddar cheese
TOPPING
1 Roll (hard crust sourdough
- or french roll)
2 tbspButter
3/4 cupShredded Cheddar cheese
Procedures:
1Cook macaroni according to package directions.
2in large saucepan, melt butter.
3Add onion and cook until tender.
4Stir in flour, salt.
5Mustard, salt and pepper.
6All milk slowly, stirring constantly, and cook until sauce is thickened and bubbly.
7Add cheese and stir until melted.
8Combine cooked macaroni and cheese mixture and mix well.
9Pour into buttered casserole.
10(i use one that"s about 12" square).
11Top with topping and bake in 375 oven for 20 - 25 minutes.
12to make topping: tear roll apart and use steel blade of food processor to chop into fine bread crumbs.
13Melt better in small saucepan then add crumbs and toss until covered with butter.
14Combine buttered crumbs with cheese and spread over casserole.
15i generally serve this with sauteed kielbasa.
16kraft"s macaroni and cheese is great and i always have boxes in the cupboard as it"s something my son can make in a hurry.
17However, "sure doesn"t compare to mom"s!"
18as with many of my recipes, i evolved this from one i originally found on a macaroni box.
