| 1 | Assemble and prepare all vegetables. |
| 2 | Place short ribs and water in a heavy soup pot. |
| 3 | Turn burner to high and boil. |
| 4 | Add all the vegetables and bring to a rolling boil. |
| 5 | Add bay leaf, salt and pepper, and barley. |
| 6 | Stir well. |
| 7 | Cover immediately with a tight fitting lid. |
| 8 | Cook in a hay box 8 hours. |
| 9 | Reheat on top of stove a few minutes. |
| 10 | Serves 6-8. |
