| 2 | combine flour and 1 teaspoon salt. |
| 3 | Cut in shortening until crumbly. |
| 4 | Stir in milk until pastry froms a ball; set aside. |
| 5 | Stir brown sugar, butter, cinnamon and remaining salt to form a paste. |
| 6 | Divide and press into center of each apple; pat any extra filling on outside of apples. |
| 7 | On a floured surface, roll pastry into a 14 inch square. |
| 8 | Cut into 4 - 7 inch squares. |
| 9 | Place one apple in center of each square. |
| 10 | Brush edges of pastry with egg white. |
| 11 | Fold up corners to center; pinch to seal. |
| 12 | Place in a greased 9 inch square baking dish. |
| 13 | Bake at 375°F for 35 ~ 40 minutes or until golden brown. |
| 14 | Meanwhile, combine sugar and cornstarch in a saucepan. |
| 15 | Stir in water. |
| 16 | Bring to a boil; boil 2 minutes. |
| 17 | Remove from heat; stir in remaining ingredients until smooth. |
| 18 | Serve warm over warm dumplings. |
