Forgotten meringues

Ingredients:
6 Egg whites (?cup)
1 1/2 tspLemon juice
-or
1/2 tspCream of tartar
2 cupSugar
Procedures:
1Heat oven to 400°F.
2(med hot).
3Beat egg whites with lemon juice or cream of tartar until frothy.
4Gradually beat in sugar a little at a time.
5Beat until stiff and glossy.
6Drop by small spoonfuls in circles on brown paper on baking sheet, or heap into high mounds and hollow out with back of spoon.
7Put into oven, close door, turn off oven.
8(don"t peek!) let stand overnight in oven.
9makes 12 meringues.
10To serve: fill meringues with ice cream, top with fresh fruit or with butterscotch or chocolate sauce and salted pecans or almonds.
