Procedures:
| 1 | Lightly butter a jelly-roll pan. | | 2 | In a 3-quart microwave-safe casserole with high sides, mix sugar, salt, syrup, and 1 cup hot water. | | 3 | Cook on high until boiling, about 8 minutes. | | 4 | Stir. | | 5 | Cook until mixture reaches 260f on a candy thermometer, about 15 to 20 minutes. | | 6 | When the bubbling stops, stir in 2 tablespoons butter, the vanilla, and food color. | | 7 | Pour into prepared pan. | | 8 | Cool about 5 minutes. | | 9 | Lightly butter hands; gather one sixth of taffy into a ball. | | 10 | Pull until taffy holds its shape in a ?inch thick strand. | | 11 | With buttered shears, cut into 1-inch lengths. | | 12 | Wrap each piece in plastic wrap. | | 13 | Note: other flavorings can be used. | | 14 | Add according to taste. | | 15 | Makes 1 ?pounds. | | 16 | [ mccall"s; january 1990 |
